A Snapshot Life with Vanessa Jordan
A Snapshot Life with
I am originally from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and I recently moved to Nashville, TN! I am not married and I don't have any children. I am I full-time graphic designer and I am working on my side hustle of my photography business to have that be full-time. I have a BA in Design Arts which encompasses graphic design, marketing, branding and photography.
How did you get inspired to start doing what you do as an influencer in your industry?:
I was inspired to go into the photography world because of horrible senior pictures experience. I didn't want anyone to feel the way I did so I decided to take it into my own hands!
After having my business for a while I realized that there was a lack of education in the graphic design, marketing and branding for small business owners so I have jumped into being an educator and sharing my knowledge with others. With that I have found many services and products that have helped me grow my business that I share with others to grow to more of an influencer.
We often have a book, podcast, video, or event that stands out to us and is instrumental in shifting our perspective in business. Do you have one that has been a significant impact for you moving forward? If so, can you share?
I have listened to SOOOOO many podcasts and read so many books that I really couldn't pin down one that has changed everything for me. Really the educator shift came from attending a photographer's retreat. While talking to the other photographers on what they are struggling with, I realized that I could answer a lot of their questions which helped me make that shift.
What are some of your biggest lessons learned over the years and what are you applying to your business today that is working for you?
I have learned the importance of showing up on Instagram as well as sharing about myself. This is so important so you are able to connect with your audience and then be able to influence them to invest in products and services. Also EMAIL LISTS are your best friend. I never realized how important they were until recently.
What has been your biggest challenge and how have you worked to overcome it?
My biggest challenge has got to be initially starting and growing my business. It is so hard to start, especially something in a VERY saturated industry. You see all the success everyone is having adn you doubt that you can have that success too. For me I just kept going. I loved working with people through my business and capturing stories that it pushed me to overcome those times of doubt.
What’s the best advice you ever received?
The best advice I've ever received is to always be creating. I listened to a podcast that talked about when times are tough and your back is against the wall.
All you have is time during those times, so use that time to your advantage.
Always be creating and never stop. keep being inspired and challenge yourself and then naturally times will get better.
What’s your best advice for handling criticism?
It's really advice I have just given myself. I try to not let it bother me because everyone has their own opinion and has a right to it. If they don't like what I do or like my style of photography then that's fine. That's one person compared to all the other people who do like it and support me.
I always try to find the good in everything.
What do you believe your true purpose is? What value and impact do you hope serve and give to others?
I believe my true purpose is to teach. Whether that is to teach my clients on how to prepare for sessions or to teach other small business owners on how to improve and grow their businesses with good graphic design and branding. I feel that I have always been meant to teach. I hope to give others the hope in starting their own business by giving them the tools as well as showing my clients that they are indeed beautiful and photography isn't a money making scheme.
How do you structure your days?
I structure my days around my work schedule. I then to assign myself tasks to tackle one or two things a day. I like to give my mind and body time to relax and be inspired as well as get work done.
How do you find time to follow your entrepreneurial journey while juggling other life responsibilities?
I find time by making time.
I try really hard to be able to find the balance of work, my business and day to day life. The best way I have been able to make time is to be intentional and schedule it. I knwo that sounds crazy but then I will be able to give an even amount of time to everything without feeling distracted.
What tools do you find indispensable in your day-to-day business?
I am able to quickly check on text messages, Facebook messages, emails and schedules all with out taking out my phone. I hate to be with a client and I have to check the timeline and then have to go through my phone to find it. My Apple watch makes it a lot more professional.
Social Media is such a gateway for influencer’s today. What platforms work best for you and why do you choose to use them the most?
Instagram and Pinterest. Those are typically where people look for photographers and since photography is so visual, it's the best way to showcase my work!
What are you tips for maintaining a present influence on these platforms and how do you encouraging continued engagement with your following?
My tips are to actually engage with your audience as well as posting often. I most once a day so I am always at the front of my audience's minds as well as responding to their comments. Almost every post has a call to action whether that is commenting something, heading over to my website, signing up for my newsletter, etc. There is always something that I am calling them to do to continue the conversation.
What can people expect to see when following you?
They can expect good quality content! I love to share tips and tricks for clients and small business owners a like. I share my love of sweets, Disney and any of my day to day adventures. I love to share what I am doing to bring joy to others!
What do you believe set's you apart from others in your same industry?
I believe what sets me part is my experience. When you book with me or work with me you get a personalized experience only I can give. I treat you like a friend right from the start because that's what we all are! From there I hope we become like family. I want the best for my clients and I love to see the small business owners I help succeed. I am not the type of person to cut people down, I want to lift them up and showcase the amazing person they are.
What’s next for you?
What's next is to go full time. I have been building my business for the past couple of years and as I continue to grow, I would LOVE to be full time. Hopefully by this time next year, I will be a whole lot closer!
Are you involved in any organizations, foundations, or clubs? If so, how can we help raise awareness?
I am involved in the Rising Tide Society as well as a mastermind of photographers from across the country.
Lastly, what legacy do you hope to leave behind and imprint do you hope to make on others?
I hope to leave behind the inspiration and hope to follow your dreams as well as the importance of community. I want to show of beautiful everyone is and really bring to light the incredible art that photography is.
